The act was ratified at the 30 th anniversary of the
convention on rights of the child. The new act masks substantial improvements
in the legal security of children, as it forbids the marriage of any child
under the age of 18, prevents the death penalty in the case of a child coming
in to conflict with the law and forbids child labor. “this is a step towards
the recognition of the rights of children in Maldives in compliance with the
convention on the rights of the child. I am pleased to know that, under the values
of human dignity, equality and democracy, the terms of the new act mandate all duty
holders to uphold these rights. These are significant gainsaid Mr. Munir Saifuddin,
Representative of UNICEF in Maldives.
Those responsible for ensuring the fulfillment of children
are identified as antiquarians of child spite family, the community and the state.
Everyone has a role to play in ensuring children are in good health and safe
from crime, neglect and abuse. While the coming into force of a new law is a
moment of celebration, the hard work still lies ahead to implement the new requirements,
institutions, and capacity-building, adequate financial, human, and infrastructure.
“UNICEF Maldives looks forward to supporting the implementation of the child
Rights protection Act ensure that every child is provided with the protection
and development that they deserve” Saifuddin.
